He wanted to interview me?

Fri Sep 18, 2009, 12:44 PM
A few months back this awesome kid named Joshua said he wanted to interview me for his school project, so I let him. I even sent him some of my real art and prints in the end, for free. I'm so nice. Here is that interview.
Thanks Josh :iconthechosenman:
Questions about you and your art.

1.How long have you been doing your "thang"? About five years.

2.How many drawings have you done in the past year? Oh gosh...finished ones around 25, unfinished 102085395823502359703572390billion. :P

3.Do you upload all your work to dA? Oh no, no no no. I get self conscience, and don't. I have so much you have never ever seen.

4.Who or what inspired you to start drawing? Hmm my highschool art teacher. I was a pottery and sculpture student for two years and he always thought I could draw...I never tried really, but when I did it kinda came natural.

5.Have you taken any art classes? Just pottery in high school. I've always been somewhat artistic though :P

6.Do you display your art at home, school, office? I have some hung up in my house due to parents being proud, and in my room because it is marilyn monroe themed, and I actually have a piece of art displayed at the rocky mountain college of art and design...and I have NO idea where they got it...really. I don't, I didn't go to school there. Though in reality I don't typically like to look at my art I see all flaws...I guess thats a normal "artist" thing though.

7.Are you strictly a one artform person? (By this I mean do you ONLY draw, paint, photograph ect..) Oh no no no. I like to dabble in everything! Recently I have been trying my hand in fashion design its an area I have ALWAYS been interested in, but never took the leap to do it, and really I am quite good at pattern making, draping and sewing...natural I guess. I am helping my friends little sister make a dress for homecoming and its just how she pictured it. I can't wait to see it all finished, we even found the perfect shoes to re-do and that has been a blast! I also love photography, not very good at it though.

8.Have you ever finished a piece of art and was completely satisfied? YES! That is an amazing feeling, and it doesn't happen so often, which is sad, but it happens! I am my own worst critic.

9.Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do? Yes, and I did for a while this past summer...I just didn't feel it, I was heartbroken, depressed and lazy. But I have been feeling a lot better and now drawing pretty much daily for at least 20 mintues or more.

10.Are you particular about your materials? I am...very. After my friend Christina bought me these magnificent staedtler pencils, I won't use much of anything else. Although I am really bad about losing stuff :/ I need a better work place.

11.What is your work space like? Ha...my bed, couch, dinning table, or an airplane. Thats my workspace. Its nothing special.

12.What is your favorite thing to draw? I like to do portraits! And snazzy handsome men in suits...particularly striped suit and striped shirts. Ohhh they also should have facial hair. :D...my boyfriend gets annoyed with the amount of Johnny Depp portraits I do. haha.

13.Do you make money off your art? I do...but I haven't for awhile...I haven't really had my heart in it to do commissions, they really do bore me. Sorry!

14.How do you pick your subjects? I draw who I like and what I like. I also take into account the photograph and how clear it is. I like to be able to see details...I was never very good at making that stuff up :/ wish I was. But I have been getting better!

15.What makes you draw? I just had a conversation with my boyfriend the other night, and he helped to me remember that I draw for me and no one else. I do it because it makes me happy. Of course people like to look at it and that makes me feel good if it pleases them but in the end its all for me.

16.What is your biggest annoyance when it comes to your art? I am not all that fantastic with skin texture, or texture in general thats why I like to draw on watercolor paper it adds that bit of texture, but lately I have been practicing. And this sounds stupid but my signature bugs the crap out of me...I see all these artist with neat signatures and mine is just...bleh, looks crappy.

17.Can you list all your materials in which you use, also on average how big do you draw? Surely. For pencils I use such a variety of wicked things...mostly staedtler pencils, some mechanical pencils too, I like to use 4b a lot. I use different types of water color paper...usually the cheap ones :P, tissues, q-tips, make up sponges, fingers, kneadable eraser, tons of erasers...hmm charcoal, and chalk pastels. I normally draw 12x15 inches or less.

18.What is your favorite art piece that you have done? Hmm, probably my Mr.Depp one. [link] . It has all my favorite components for drawing. A man, a suit, stripes, fantastic hair, and Johnny. I also really enjoyed doing my Key Largo piece [link] I am a fan of classic movies and that one was just fun with the different shirt textures. It was also on grey toned paper so my white charcoal shows up really well on the original piece.

19.Do you tend to gravitate to men or women in your drawings? Men definitely. I like the ridgid hard lines and geometic-ness of their faces and bodies. I know other people like to draw women for the exact opposite reason they like those organic shapes and thats cool too, but I can't find many women I actually enjoy drawing.

20.Who do you look up to when it comes to your art? Everyone, no seriously everyone. I get a lot of people that come to me and say "I wish I could draw like you" and really when I look at their art I see things that I wish I could do, or they have some sort of technique I wish I knew, even if their drawings aren't executed perfectly I still can find something about them that makes me look up to them.

21.Has anyone ever given you crap for your age or being a woman when it came to your art? I get a lot of that, "Oh my, I thought only men could draw like that." Or "I thought you were much older." Mostly I get "shouldn't you be left handed? ALL great artists are left handed." No sorry I am a 21 year old Female that is right handed. :P Doesn't bug me though, just breaking the stereotypes.

22.If you could do another type of art what would it be? Photography, hands down. I love it.

23.When it comes to your "fans" or watchers do they ever annoy you? No, not really. I appreciate all of them, I really do. I am not "dA famous" so its not like I have thousands a day buggin' me. I have some very loyal watchers and ones that look up to me and ask questions. I LOVE that. So questions...ask away!

24.Have you ever drawn what you thought was popular just to get popular? Lol no...if I wanted to do that I would be drawing Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. I have drawn Harry Potter, but I am indeed a Potter fan. I have drawn Edward Cullen but it was for a friend, and like I said I draw what I like. :)

25.Do you have any weird quirks or techniques when it comes to your drawings? Oh Lordly, yes. Yes I do. I always start with the hair, then I tend to work on bottom of the face or body...eyes always seem to be last! I love drawing eyes though. I really think they have a HUGE effect on how the drawing will turn out, they can make or break that realistic look.

26.Any good advice you can give to people that aspire to draw like you? Don't give up, make it your own, experiment, and never ever let your cat eat your kneadable erasers, thats a whole nother story.

27.Has your cat REALLY eaten your kneadable eraser? Yes. twice. I get up to go do something and she steals them, runs away and I find it half eaten in the litter box. It is bad and disgusting.

28.What is your favorite tool you have? Hmmm...the pencil? Or the eraser...probably the eraser.WAIT I have this nifty brush to sweep away all the debris...that. lol.

29.Are you planning on ever making a career out of what you do? Probably not, it'd be nice but I just don't see it happening...sadly. *crosses fingers* maybe someday.

30.Lastly, what can we expect from you in the future? Nothing! lol jk, I want to get more into drawing things without a reference photo, things from my head...I'm not the best at that. I also want to do more backgrounds and more than just those pretty fog/cloud ones. I wanna use charcoal more and draw bigger.

Art is an amazing thing to create. I stick to my cartoons and learn new things daily. I try to dabble in everything =)

It's long been clear that you're an interesting and maybe sometimes unconventional person (all the great ones are). I found it surprising (but very cool!)that you begin portraits with the hair [the part of the whole process that, for me, is the most daunting and almost deterring] and you do the windows of the soul last. I normally do a rough outline of the whole head and sometimes the figure. Then I try to place the nose ('cause so many of us tend to make them too long) and then, most importantly--make or break--the eyes. After that everything is relative gravy until the crowning glory (and most demanding task) of the hair. Your system obviously work very, very well! :worship:

I think artists that dabble in everything do it to keep themselves sane! :)

I tend to surprise people with my unconventionalness. I guess it is quite the quirk of mine that draws people to me :P. When it comes to drawing and me starting with hair and leaving eyes till last...well I used to be the opposite. I always did eyes first and that was fine, it was what I was best at...but I realized it was because I spent more time on them, now I can do eyes in barely anytime at all with all that practice under my belt, so moved to starting with hair (of course i rough sketch everything first). I figured thats how I got good at doing eyes, whatever I start with first is what I tend to spend the most time on and the more time, the more practice. :P its weird but I feel it has improved my hair drawings skills.

Thank you much for the compliment, you're very sweet

That is also true. I get so bored with one thing or one style I have to do all I can to enjoy art ^^

I only wish I had the ability to draw well, yet in a way I would never give up my hobby of making jewelry. I'm not super good at it, but I'm still learning and discovering new techniques and designs, even if someone else did it first. I also absolutely love the fact that I can look at individual pieces like beads and charms and pendants and get inspired to make something totally new(though sometimes it takes a while to tink of something). That's what happened with my zodiac bead bracelets, I was inspired by the tag and the silver zodiac beads.

You're a wonderful artist and more power to you, your abilities, and your passion. :)
